This 350 acres big citypark is Madrid's biggest. It is part of the boundary of the city centre and forms a haven of peace and quiet, an excellent place to catch your breath with some fresh oxygen. Originally, between 1630 and 1640, the park's soothing effect was exclusively for the royal family to enjoy, hence it's name: the 'good rest park' or 'good retirement park'. But after the gardens were partially destroyed during the French invasion in 1808 they were remade and opened to the main public.
